History of Art

Departmental Overview

The department has strong links with the Art School and the course is especially helpful for pupils intending to study Art beyond A level. History of Art is taught for four periods a week and visual aids are utilized for most lessons. The History of Art teacher is an artist herself, married to an artist, whose children are all artists, so has much in common with Peter McNiven, the Director of Art. There is an extremely generous amount of art books in the Williams Library, and the pupils are encouraged to browse whenever they have a free moment.

Academic Overview

The Course is offered over two years at AS Level, and is very useful as a supplement to the study of Art at Cranleigh. Pupils with an eagerness to learn about signs and symbols and meanings in Art will love this challenging but stimulating and inspiring course. They will study visual analysis and interpretation in their first year. This concentrates on the knowledge and understanding of the formal aspects of paintings, sculpture and architecture. In their second year they will study themes in the history of Art. The eight themes are: subjects and genres; materials, techniques and processes; form and style; form and function; Historical and social contexts; patronage; social and cultural status; and gender, nationality and ethnicity. At the end of their two years, they will be able to ‘read’ the three disciplines and take their working knowledge with them as a background to whatever subject they then decide to study.

Examination Results

The 2008 examination results were the best ever, with all pupils attaining an ‘A’ Grade.

Departmental Trips and News

Art trips are arranged by the Art School but are then discussed in History of Art lessons.

Additional Information

Although the course works towards an examination, as many topical concerns and interests are discussed as possible to broaden the scope of the pupils’ knowledge. The pupils also make regular presentations on topics which have especially interested them.
