Housemaster – Mr Charlie Boddington
Mr Charlie Boddingtonwas appointed Housemaster of Cubitt in September 2007, after six years as Deputy Housemaster of Loveday. When not overseeing the House, he teaches Business Studies and Economics (and helps write the exam case study revision disc, so is a useful person for the pupils to know!); coaches rugby, cricket and hockey, and tries to pursue some personal sporting interests (age and joints permitting). He lives with his wife and four young children, two of whom are at Cranleigh Preparatory School.
Deputy Housemaster – Mr Gordon Neill
Mr Gordon Neill has been a tutor in Cubitt since he arrived at Cranleigh in September 2003 and was appointed Deputy Housemaster in September 2007. He lives on-site with his wife, Clair (a Modern Languages teacher at Cranleigh) and his young son, Finnbar. He was educated at Bangor Grammar School, Reading University and Queen’s University, Belfast and has just completed an MA in Literature through the Open University. He enjoys maintaining the characteristically Cubittian values of mutual support, kindness, House spirit and good-natured badinage. Outside the House, he teaches English at GCSE and A Level – often sporting a fine tweed suit - and is a particular aficionado of P.G.Wodehouse, Dorothy L. Sayers, Tobias Smollett and Restoration Comedy. He has directed a number of plays in his time at Cranleigh as well as pursuing his passion for sport, coaching the U14 A and B XVs and the 3rd XIs in cricket and soccer.
Day Warden – Mr Fergus Wilson
Mr Fergus Wilson began his Cranleigh career as a Tutor in Cubitt before being appointed Deputy Housemaster of East, a position he held for six years. From September 2008, he has taken over as Day Warden of Cubitt, a position to which he has brought his own blend of thoroughness and enthusiasm. He teaches Biology, is Master i/c Athletics, coaches the 3rd XV rugby and is also the elected Chairman of Cranleigh’s Senior Common Room. He is also the proud owner of a splendid pair of plus fours, in which he occasionally bestrides the School golf course.
TUTORS
Mr Brian Browneis an experienced IVth Form Tutor who has been part of the Cubitt team for the past eight years. A native of Belfast, he teaches Mathematics in all year groups and is a keen and talented sportsman, coaching both the Colts A XV and the soccer 1st XI, as well as being Master i/c football. He is renowned for his ability to dominate a midfield, as well as for his remarkable sartorial elegance.
Mr David Cresswell is an OC who returned to Cranleigh in 2008, having graduated from Oxford University, where he captained the 1st XI hockey team. He is teaching Theatre Studies and Classical Civilisation and Critical Thinking, in addition to playing a major role in the coaching of hockey and tennis, and has already demonstrated his willingness to immerse himself in the whirligig of Cubitt life by volunteering to help Gordon Neill direct the Cubitt House Play. He was himself a star of several productions when a pupil at Cranleigh.
Mr Neil Bennettis a Cubitt veteran, a benevolent curmudgeon without whom the House would be a much poorer place. An outstanding sportsman, Neil won seven caps for England at fly half, between 1975 and 1979, and helps coach both the 1st XV and the cricket 1st XI, in addition to teaching Mathematics and Physical Education. He enjoys using his wiles to wrestle with the intricacies of the Daily Telegraph crossword and has lately acquired a dog, as a result of which, amusingly, he has decided to swap his convertible for a Skoda.
Mr Toby Moschard joined Cranleigh in September 2007, as Assistant Director of Music and Head of Academic Music. A Scotsman by birth, he is a most accomplished musician, who plays the Chapel organ with considerable aplomb. He is also a talented linguist and has, within a short time, endeared himself to his Cubitt tutees as a result of his calm, good-natured efficiency.
Mr Paul Crosfield is an iconic Cubitt figure, a man whose immortality has already been assured through the inevitable chanting of his initials which accompanies any mass gathering of Cubittians. Head of Modern Languages, Deputy Head of Academic Administration and – appropriately, given his name – Master i/c Cross-Country, he is a most dedicated and affable Tutor, whose collages of Cubitt photographs are amongst the most striking and engaging sights of the House. He recently cycled from Poland to Lithuania for charity on a mouldering heap of pig-iron and the fact that he completed the course speaks volumes for both his fitness and his determination!
Mr Tim Fearn is the Head of Academic Administration and has also served as Head of Physics for a number of years. His dry sense of humour, eye for the absurd and commitment to the Cubitt cause has made him a most popular member of the Tutor team. In addition to his considerable academic commitments – mention the word ‘timetabling’ to him and see what happens! – he is also a keen sportsman who has coached football and cricket, as well as representing the Common Room golf team.
Dr Simon Young has served Cubitt with distinction for many years in the role of Day Warden. Loud of voice and bushy of beard, the tweedy logist (both Geo and Bio) is now the Head of Outdoor Education, a position which enables him to indulge his fondness for a good yomp, as a result of which he is often to be found, sodden yet still cheerful, somewhere on a Welsh mountain. He is also the OC of the School’s CCF, a renowned epicure, and an unabashed traditionalist.
MATRONS
Mrs Jan Goldsmith has been Matron in Cubitt since 1992, a position she filled single-handedly until 2004, and has been a much-loved figure to hundreds of Cubittians over the last sixteen years. As the wife of an experienced schoolmaster (who taught at Cranleigh), the mother of three sons and being from a nursing background, she is ideally placed to help supervise a boys' boarding house, noting that a sense of humour is a prerequisite for the job! Outside Cubitt, she enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, gardening, walking and going to the theatre, whilst she is also a keen follower of all sports.
Mrs Andrea Young has joined the Cubitt team this September and has already proved a most able and popular matron, whose calm, efficient manner has done much to endear her to the House. The wife of Dr Simon Young - a member of the Biology department and a Cubitt tutor – and a mother of four, Andrea used to be a solicitor before doing stints as Matron in East, South, North and Cubitt. In her spare time, she thoroughly enjoys bell-ringing. |
