Cranleigh has six Eton Fives courts situated in the centre of the School campus, and is one of about 30 schools in the country playing the sport actively. Fives is played by a healthy number of Cranleighans (including an OCs’ team) and all new pupils have the opportunity to learn this rather idiosyncratic sport – assisted by our visiting professional, who runs sessions for beginners and team players on Tuesday afternoons.
Weekly fixtures are organised in the Lent term for boys, including matches against all the top Fives-playing schools, Highgate, Shrewsbury, Eton and St Olave’s, with often as many as 18 pairs competing in one fixture, from U14 all the way up to Senior level. We also play smaller schools such as Lancing and Charterhouse, and have the opportunity to play Rugby Fives against Christ’s Hospital, and St John’s School’s unique Fives game. The highlight of the year is the Fives National Championships held at the end of the Lent term, in which in the last few years we have had pairs in the last 16 and the quarter-finals.
