Golf

Cranleigh boasts a beautiful 9-hole golf course, which plays host to plenty of golf amongst all year groups throughout the year, but mainly during the Michaelmas and Summer terms. As well as a regular activity slot that the pupils can opt for three days a week, during which some professional tuition is made available, keen golfers are also actively encouraged to play a few holes in their spare time.

Junior and Senior House matches take place in the Summer term, along with the Cronk Salver and the Kemp Quaich – medal competitions for Senior and Junior age groups. respectively. There are several U14 and U15 fixtures throughout the year, but the majority of the team golf is played by the senior team, who also enjoy practice days at Bramley – the local club with whom Cranleigh has a strong connection. The senior team will usually play a match a week, normally on Tuesdays, and also compete in the HMC Foursomes competition, the Schools’ Invitational tournament at Pulborough, and Girls' Invitation events at Walton Heath and Sunningdale.  The team play a selection of friendly matches against other schools and a bi-annual fixture against the Old Cranleighan Golf Society playing for the Gordon Taylor Trophy.  At the end of the Summer term, the team travel to the Kent coast for a two-day tour where we play a match against King’s Canterbury and then play at Deal, one of the Halford Hewitt courses.

Every Summer for the past 14 years, a group of seniors has been invited to travel to the Open Championship, where we run one of the 18th-hole leaderboards for the duration of the tournament. It is always a very special week, and a unique chance for Cranleighans to watch their golfing heroes in the flesh, as well as experience the ebb and flow of a major tournament as it unfolds.
