The final of the Junior Schools Challenge was, for the first time ever held on the first Friday of the summer term. A strong North team actually answered more startersIMG_0545 correctly (12 to 8) but needed from the last starter the full 50 points with bonus to force a tie. Ironically, the team seemed to be debating whether a ‘Victoria’ was a type of lemon or a plum and the latter reply would have led to five minutes extra time (which has happened only three times in 35 years). I want to thank Mr Neill for his meticulous scoring and for agreeing to run the two competitions next year. Before the contest Mr Griffiths kindly pointed out that this quiz was a last as well as a first and thus the last ever answer to around 40, 000 questions I have set turned out to be ‘cherry’.

It was a special pleasure that the winning team (and the North team, indeed) were four such splendid people, including two families I know quite well: Taylor Seager-Green, Chris Oldfield, Toby and Benjamin Chesser. As Toby correctly asked me, “were you still running the quiz when my Dad was at Cranleigh?”
